Ulster Museum: jewellery collection – the pearls

From the small but perfectly formed jewellery collection at the Ulster Museum in Belfast, these two charming pieces. Forgive the less than perfect photography, but I just had to share these two with you.

Seed pearl pendant, early-mid 19th century. Belleek brooch, mid-late 19th century

Now, I wanted to share these not just because I’m a sucker for pearls, but because the pendant was made long before the techniques for mass production of cultured pearls had been harnessed. Isn’t it something very special? Belleek is a Northern Irish pottery company in County Fermanagh: you either love its style or hate it. There are no half measures! I love this brooch: its not pearl, but it looks like pearl and its just on the right side of tastefulness.
